We built a nice little remote control for our awes We built a nice little remote control for our awesome #akgb20 spring reverb!

This little unit is placed on the right side of the desk at the producer desk - together with the custom made headphone amp.

One thing most people don't know is that till the 1980ies it was pretty common that studios modified equipment or built their own gear. The larger studios had their own technical teams. Companies like #Trident, #Raindirk or dozen of others were founded out of recording studios.

Nowadays it is pretty rare for a studio to have it's own employed tech team. Only the larger legends like #captiolrecords or #abbeyroadstudios still have tech teams.

Recording the unbelievable Privatiers on our 8trac Recording the unbelievable Privatiers on our 8track Studer A800 MKIII.

Using just eight tracks forces you to make tought decisions during the recording process - do you want to record the drums on separate tracks? Stereo? Or just mono as in the old times? Just imagine, that the #beatles used only four tracks on their famous records!

With a three-piece band as #dieprivatiers it is a little easier. We decided to record the drums in stereo, just one track for the guitar, lead vocals, a track for the #korgms20 played by the lead singer and a separate track for the #rolandre301 which is a destinctive sound for the band. That leaves 2 tracks for overdubs such as background vocals and additional guitars...

Just a very quick look inside our new EMT 251. Rea Just a very quick look inside our new EMT 251. Really amazing beast with hundreds of discrete logic ICs, no microprocessor, minimal RAM but still one of the best sounding digital reverbs ever made!

To avoid copycats, the EMT technicians have sanded down all the ICs on the back so that you can not read the type designations. This makes these units relatively difficult to repair today.

So let's hope that our Studiotech ACI can get this miracle unit working again!

Another very nice gear we have on sale is this RTW Another very nice gear we have on sale is this RTW master peakmeter with an additional correlation meter.

In 1965, Rudolf Twelker founded RTW as a service company for the repare of radio and television devices in Cologne, Germany. RTW (abbrevation for Radio TV Werkstatt) soon became a synomym for serious metering - even in DAWs people often say „Let’s check the RTW“. The company builts essential tools for recording studios, video studios, radio stations - you name it.

The PPM1206 is the (!) standard peakmeter and was first introduced in 1978 and built for more than 30 years!

The COR1260 is one of the best correlation meters you can get. A lot of people don’t understand correlation meters - so pretty basic explanation:

A correlation of +1 means that the left and right channels are 100% correlated, i.e. completely in phase. This means that both speakers perform the same movements which results to a mono playback.

A correlation of 0 (middle position) indicates the maximum deviation of both channels as it occurs in extreme stereo effects. This means that the movements of both speakers have "nothing to do with each other".

Negative values indicate phase rotation. If the stereo signal is mixed down to mono, phase cancellations would occur. At -1, both speaker cones would move in exactly opposite direction.

So usually your metering should move between 0 and +1!

PPM1206 and COR1260 combined is anything you need for metering your mix!

If you're interesting in buying that one - please DM me!

In the last few posts we've looked at the channels In the last few posts we've looked at the channels and routing matrix of our Raindirk Symphony, and I hope we haven't forgotten anything essential. So let's move on to the master section - first: the aux / cue master section.

The Symphony has 8 mono aux sends and 2 stereo cues - as described in one of the last posts, four aux sends (and of course the 2 stereo cues) can be used simultaneously per channel.

When leaving the aux/cue send of the channel, the signal hits the aux/cue master first. The aux master has an AFL (After Fader Listening) button to listen to the signal from the aux bus. This is very useful - first to check if the expected signal really arrives on the selected aux bus, and second to make sure that the aux bus is not overloaded.

For the cue buses, listening to the AFL is especially important because you usually use the cue buses for the artists' headphone mixes. So listening to the AFL of the cue bus gives you the opportunity to hear exactly what the artist is hearing through the headphones.

On our console, the aux and cue signals are hardwired to the most common outboard effects in our rack. So we have our AMS RMX, TC2290, Ursa Major Spacestation and others ready to go. Our Lexicon 480L uses the cue 2 bus, as we like to run the 480L in stereo mode.

(With our new EMT251 and AKG BX25 hopefully coming back from service soon, we may have to reconsider hardwired connections...).

If you want to use other devices on the aux/cue sends, you can simply break the hardwired connection at the patchbay and plug in another device. Very simple!

For headphone mixes, we usually use cue 1, which is connected to our six-channel headphone amplifier. During most recording sessions one headphone mix is enough and if we need more individual mixes, we usually do them on the digital layer in our RME interface and go directly to the headphone amp.
