I can watch this for hours!

The tape in such a Roland Space Echo 301 is already almost art. When you first open it up, it's hard to believe it works. But as if by magic, the tape is always spooled into the magazine and fed out the other side.

The magic of the old tape echoes comes, of course, largely from the way the tape is transported. It's not hard to imagine that there are always small fluctuations in synchronization that make up the characteristic sound of these machines.

Can not be used for all, but for many things :-) And if you don't want to use it as an echo or chorus, you can just hang it in your signal chain and just use the distortion of the boxes to color the sound. I just saw a video of the legendary #mosesschneider , where he tells that on a Beatsteaks album they ran everything through a Roland Space Echo - just to beat the sound of this box on tape.

The great unboxing! Today we received our beautiful Neumann U47fet, with which our old Neumann U47 will no longer feel quite so lonely in the closet.

With the U47fet, Neumann introduced the successor to the legendary U47 in the mid-1960s, switching from tube technology, which was considered outdated at the time, to "modern" transistor technology.

In terms of shape, the U47 FET looks like a U47 that is too short, attached to a swivel bracket. Inside, however, it is fundamentally different. The core is now a fancy field effect transistor (FET) instead of the old VF14 tubes. The new design also means that the U47fet can withstand an enormous sound pressure - 137dB which can then be raised to a whopping 147dB with the -10dB pad. It is not without reason that the U47fet is often used in front of the bass drum or on basses.

However, one should not be blinded by the prejudice of being a "kick drum mike" - the U47fet is an absolute all-rounder, like all Neumann microphones, and it is also, for example, an excellent vocal microphone with its very own unique character. James Hetfeild from Metallica uses a U47fet in the studio and somewhere I've read that Michael Stipe from REM also often used a U47fet.

But you should not be deceived by the name: Although the capsule is identical to the K47 used on the U47 since 1958, the character of the mic is really completely different.

Gosh! We have been waiting for this and now it is finally here: Our beautiful Bechstein grand piano!

It used to be a pretty normal thing for a studio to have a decent grand piano - but due to digitalization and the fact that the big studios are becoming fewer and fewer, this is now a rarity. But since we have more than enough space in Live 1 with 140 square meters, it was clear to us that we absolutely needed a grand piano.

Our Bechstein comes from a former piano teacher and is looked after by our friend Hein, who restores and maintains grand pianos. We are already looking forward to the first recordings!

In the good old days, you always got really excellent technical documentation with your studio equipment. This usually included comprehensive schematics and excellent technical documentation - as seen here from our #Raindirk Symphony console. This ensured that studio technicians could repair the equipment independently and quickly.

Excellent documentation is available from most manufacturers of large recording consoles, which have always been handmade and produced in small batches. But the world champion in documentation is above all Studer, who delivered super thick manuals with their machines, where you wonder who wrote it all together.

Today, we're super glad that the engineers back then put in so much work. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to work properly with all the vintage equipment today. It's a shame that modern equipment hardly ever comes with a proper instruction manual!

Something completely different: From my personal collection a totally awesome 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom with rare nickel hardware. I also own the same guitar from the same year in white - just in case I ever need to wear a white stage outfit....

Les Pauls from this era are often called "fretless wonders" because Gibson used very low, almost invisible frets.

This Les Paul was modified in the 1980s with some hand-wound @seymourduncanpickups humbuckers labeled "DCJ", indicating that these pickups were made by pickup legend Maricela "MJ" Juarez at the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop. It's a great guitar for rock tones and you just can't help but have it hanging on your knees.

Another addition to #k22studios: An @thisisapiaudio 2500+ bus compressor which now complements our master and bus compression section.

The API 2500+ definetly is a tone beast and coloration machine amazing for adding punch, depth and character to your tracks. It’s especially good for drums (we love it!), but also capable of achieving a wide range of sounds from silky smooth to raw grunge. We already loved the @uaudio digital version of the API but the real thing is so much more! It is great for dance productions and it’s a great tool to infuse some life and energy back into anything you throw at it, especially digital synths and overly squashed samples (yes, it can do that, even though it’s a compressor). It's our go-to compressor for drum busses and background vocals too.

Besides it's sonic quality it is also one of the most versatile and complex units in our rack. The 2500 is a piece of gear that can take weeks or months to explore. There are simply too many permutations of control settings. Just when you think you know the unit you'll discover some new sounds which blow you away.
