Fat and just fat. And in fact in no way to compare Fat and just fat. And in fact in no way to compare with the known software emulations. With a real Mini Moog you can make basses that you don't hear, but keep the needle on your VU-meter in the right stop...

The only downer is that you have to turn the thing on an hour beforehand so that the oscillators warm up and stay tunable. Nevertheless you have to retune it every now and then...

This fine mini-Moog was kindly provided by a nice client who was looking for a place to keep his gem warm and dry.

One of those old school techniques, that have long One of those old school techniques, that have long been forgotten in the digital age: The art of looping a tape. @brianeno @robertfrippofficial and @itspetergabriel were among the first to use this concept in pop music. I remember seeing pictures of tape loops running throughout their studio...

Basically it's quite simple: Record a piece of music on tape, cut the beginning and the end, tape it together and run it to your machine using a mic stand or similar as an extended pulley.

Well of course you can do all that stuff with your DAW in seconds. But believe me: It's only a fraction of the fun and does not sound half as good!

In the past (...no - I'm not one of those people w In the past (...no - I'm not one of those people who think that everything was better in the past...) these metal hubs were an essential consumable in every recording studio. These so-called "AEG bobbies" (or "AEG hubs" in English - even though BASF and others had them too...) were the reels on which you wound 1/4" master tape. In contrast to the normal tape reels that most people know, in the professional field they had limited themselves to the essentials in order to save material and costs. On your tape machine you had a nice dispenser and in a normal session one has already so 20-30 of the things used....

A journalist from the WDR recently told me that (in the old days...) the reporters brought the contributions to the studio, where each one was then winded onto a bobby and all the bobbies were put on a stick in the chronology of the broadcast, from which the executive sound engineer then took them down in the course of the broadcast.

In the studio there were still such nice cardboard boxes for storage. Both are unfortunately no longer available today and bobbies are traded on ebay used for 3-4€ a piece! Fortunately, we were able to dust off just under 500 Bobbies from the stocks of the Hessische Broadcast Station during our recent forays... That should be enough for a while nowadays...

...one thing recording with a DAW is that you have ...one thing recording with a DAW is that you have virtually an unlimited track count. That often leads to the situation where you record a few additional mics and tracks...

This set-up is for trio with drums, guitar and vocals and was planned as direct to 8-track Studer A800 first. Beside essential drum mikes we tried a couple of different room mikes and since the band does not have a bass player we added some more mikes to the guitar cabinet to shoot out which one gave the best fundamental.

We usually record drums in a very old-fashioned, purist way, and this setup is a little unusual. But the number of tracks is nothing for a modern metal drum setup, where you often have more than 24 mics on the drums alone! Just to trigger everything at the end...

Well guys... we are some lucky fuckers! Just recen Well guys... we are some lucky fuckers! Just recently we were able to purchase a complete studio that was known for recording many famous German records in the 1990s and early 2000s. The owner quit and we took over the equipment. One reason to do this deal was that part of the deal were two excellent and very rare vintage UREI 1176 Bluestripes!

The first series of 1176 was released in June 1967 - the famous Revision A. Only 25 were made and they sold quickly. For the next series (Revision AB - 91 units), Bill Putnam's team changed some of the specifications to improve stability and noise. After the great success, a larger batch was made - Revision B - with more changes. Revision B was the final 1176 with the blue stripe design, of which only 859 were built. So in total, only 975 blue stripes were made! This explains why they are so sought after and prices skyrocket.

Our two 1176 are both revision Bs and we are very happy to have them! One has a very low serial number and the other one is within the last 100 ever made. As with a lot of this handbuilt vintage equipment, the two sound very different, but both are really awesome. Especially when you drive them really hard, they have an incredible sound!

We love the 1176 on just everything. Awesome on vocals, drums, guitars - you name it!
